Walmart health care plan and type 1 diabetes?

Question by Life101: Walmart health care plan and type 1 diabetes?
I work part time at Walmart while attending college. I just became eligible for health insurance. I was wondering if anyone could help me choose what plan to get that will help pay for my insulin and other diabetes supplies such as serenges and test strips. I have never had any insurance and neither has my parents. I have paid out of pocket and if the insurance is cheaper than my $ 200 a month for supplies I wil get it. I just don’t know what to get thanks for the help!

The combined diabetes care devices market for China, India and Brazil was valued at $1 billion in 2009. The growing prevalence of diabetes in emerging countries of India, China and Brazil will increase the demand for diabetes care devices in the coming years. Diabetes and other lifestyle diseases are set to replace infectious diseases and malnutrition as the main cause of morbidity and mortality in emerging countries. Lifestyle changes are increasing the prevalence of chronic, non-communicable disease like diabetes at an alarming rate. The WHO predicts that India and China will respectively lose $237 billion and $558 billion of their national income to diabetes and cardiovascular disease between 2005 and 2015. The governments of Brazil, India and China have recognized this growing epidemic and have now introduced measures to increase awareness and add treatment centers to treat diabetes. This will lead to growth in the utilization of glucose monitors and insulin delivery devices for diabetes management.

Recent advances in insulin pens, jet injectors and continuous glucose monitors (CGM) has made diabetes care devices less invasive. Quality of life has become a significant factor in defining the patient’s choice of diabetes management devices. Non-compliance among patients is a big concern due to the discomfort caused by the old generation devices. For instance, blood glucose monitoring devices are associated with considerable discomfort caused by finger pricking for the extraction of blood. Insulin syringes require vials and mixing of fast acting and slow acting insulin in the correct ratio which would be difficult for patients who are old or visually impaired. Insulin syringes are also associated with pain at the site of injection, usually in the lower abdomen. This has led to a greater use of insulin pens and the development of novel devices for use by patients who lack manual dexterity or suffer from visual problems. As living standards rise in the emerging countries, patient affordability for pens and jet injectors increases, leading to greater adoption of these devices over traditional insulin syringes.

I know that there probably isn’t a short, easy way of answering this, but I’m curious. I’m an Australian and lately I’ve seen a lot of questions relating to insurance and payment plans for having a baby in the USA. Here in Aus, the only thing you have to pay for is elective procedures when it comes to pregnancy. 3D scans, nuchal fold tests (Downs Syndrome tests) and amnios solely for the purpose of finding out the sex of the child are considered elective. Confirmation of pregnancy scans, 20 week scans, and any scans that doctors perform to check the growth of the child etc. when there is concern are performed for free. Midwives and birthing clinics in public hospitals are provided for free. Checkups with said Midwives are free (usually one a month until the last trimester, then 2 a month until the last month when you meet them weekly). Gestational diabetes tests are performed for free.Your stay in a public hospital or birthing centre/clinic (often both are in the same hospital) is provided for free. Obviously if you go into a private hospital there are fees involved, most people will have private health insurance to cover that sort of thing, but it costs more to give birth in a private hospital with health insurance than it does to give birth in a public hospital with no insurance here. The perks are private rooms etc, longer in hospital stays if you want them etc.
I’m giving all this info because I’m genuinely curious as to what sort of fees are involved with having a baby in the USA. It would definately help me when it comes to me answering other people’s questions!
Lol the weather here is great, we’re in the middle of summer. We did just have a 3 day run of around 113f weather though… Hottest summer on record for a while! Lol.
Thanks for the info guys, it really does help. I had thought that things were expensive over there when it came to having babies, but I hadn’t realised HOW expensive. This medicade that you speak of sounds like our Medicare, only Medicare is available to everyone in Australia regardless of wage status.
I would also like to give a comparison, my husband and I have paid probably around $300 for this pregnancy so far because we did the elective downs syndrome test, and also small fees involved with our GP that sound like our version of your “co-pay”. Many doctors don’t have these fees, and I could have avoided them if I’d chosen to go to a different doc, but I like mine so I stayed with them lol. And something else that my DH just pointed out that I’d forgotten to mention, in Australia we get given $5000 after we have a baby (obviously if you have twins, you get $10,000 and so on) as a way of helping you get everything set up for that child. Does the USA have anything similar?

Why the fuss over the U.S Health Care Bill?

This really is a genuine question.
I’m British and have obviously heard about the health care reforms on the horizon in the U.S.
I’ve heard it reported that it could take the form of something similar to our N.H.S…

I’m a little puzzled…I pay around £10 per month in National Insurance. National Insurance is worked out as a percentage of pay so the more you earn the more you contribute. I will be taken care of from the cradle to the grave in return.
