Baby Boomer Health Care Crisis

The United States spends more on healthcare than any other nation in the world.  We are the only wealthy, industrialized nation that doesn’t have a universal health care system.  There have been ongoing debates regarding the poor access, efficiency, and quality yet the increasing costs. It was impossible to watch one democratic nominee presidential speech without the analysis of this crisis.  What does this mean for the baby boomers that make up 27% of the total population?

Epidemiology

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) which can be due to: a) decreased production of insulin (called Type I diabetes mellitus) due to destruction of the pancreas on an autoimmune basis or b) decreased peripheral sensitivity to insulin (called type II which also has some decreased production of insulin by the pancreas) associated with obesity and lack of physical activity. Only about 5-10% of the total have type I disease, the rest have type II.

There is a great potential for the use of robotics systems in the pharmaceutical industry and pharmaceutical companies are gradually injecting more robotic systems into their operations. Robotics in pharmaceuticals lends itself to many advantages. For starters, a robotics system enhances output quality. It also ensures that companies measure up to optimum safety standards as they are after all, in the life0saving business. Speed is also key in certain pharmaceutical operations and robots are more than equipped to provide this element. Drug Dispensing Robotics systems can efficiently handle core pharmaceutical tasks such as the dispensing of medication. There are currently systems being developed for robots to handle tasks such as the filling of prescriptions. This addresses the problems associated with the work force for companies having difficulty finding competent and qualified staff. Many companies would rather invest in robotic equipment than spend money training people. Robots are also utilized in the more complex stages of production such as blister packaging. Innovations in robotic vision systems help ensure that medications are efficiently and safely stored in blister packs. These systems are even capable of detecting any inconsistencies in packing or damages to the medicine. The robot corrects the situation accordingly by segregating those items that fail quality control. The precise operations provided by a robotics system are also highly valued in products that have varied packaging dimensions. Some medicines come in bottles, some in boxes and so on. Another key advantage in the use of robotics is that it enables pharmaceutical manufacturer to accurately trace the products that they distribute into the market. In cases where there are tampering, the company can quickly find the product and recall operation swill proceed smoothly before any danger is posed to the public. Research and Development Robotics systems are also vital to research and development operations. Volume is a major concern when it comes to research and development. There are huge number of samples that need monitoring and testing. It simply will take too much time to manually test these potential medicinal candidates. Another concern is data management. There are thousand of studies conducted on a regular basis and putting in place a robotics system to handle this will make for more efficient organization. Companies will take up less time looking for a given set of information that is important to a given situation. Drug Production Robotics plays an important role in the manufacture of pharmaceutical drugs because, unlike other industries, pharmaceuticals demand higher speed and accuracy. Robotics equipment that specializes in the handling of materials is especially helpful in facilitating drug production. It is also important for manufacturers to ensure their output is produced with the safest sanitation measures in place. These are health care products and companies cannot afford to compromise on cleanliness as these poses a host of health hazards to the community. There also a lot of medical devices used to execute pharmaceutical procedures and robotics are used to create these devices. Devices such as syringes and diabetes testing kits are made with the help of robotics. Other devices produced with the help of robots include inhalers and IV bags.

Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms and Care

The symptoms of type 1 diabetes are often not easy to recognize and many people live with it for a long time before becoming aware that they are diabetes sufferers.

Type 1 diabetes is also known as insulin dependant diabetes, diabetes mellitus and / or juvenile diabetes. It is a chronic, i.e. lifelong, disease that accounts for approximately ten per cent of total diabetes cases in Europe and North America. It is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce sufficient insulin to regulate blood sugar levels appropriately.

Type 1 diabetes can affect both adults and children but is frequently called juvenile diabetes because it represents the majority of the childhood cases of diabetes.

Keeping diabetes under control can be supply-laden and pricey. People with the condition often need at least one daily medication, a glucose meter, lancets and glucose testing strips.

Some diabetes medicines are now generic and cost as little as $3 or $4 a month, or may be free through some insurers. Other, newer ones cost $100 or more a month, and insured patients often pay half that cost in co-pays. Glucose meters are often given away by companies, but the testing strips used with them can cost $1 each.

Insulin costs vary and can run to more than $200 a month for people without insurance and $20 to $40 a month in co-pays for those who do have coverage.
