A few months ago, I was diagnosed as a diabetic following a series of blood tests (in which my blood sugar count was consistently more than 13 mmol/L.
I was started on medication (Metformin, 500mg, twice a day). Based on a hunch, I got myself one of those blood sugar measuring devices, stopped taking the medication for a couple of days and started taking my own readings.
This revealed my fasting (of 12 hours) blood sugar to be 5.6 mmol/L, two hours after breakfast to be 6.7 mmol/L, two hours after lunch to be 6.5 mmol/L and 6.9mmol/L after dinner and before bedtime. If I’m to believe what I’ve been reading, this is a normal blood sugar level of a person without diabetes.

Almost one third of all people with diabetes don’t know they have it. The symptoms seem so harmless, like symptoms of just getting older. This article goes into the different types of diabetes and some of the common symptoms of each to help you understand diabetes a little better.
In this article we’ll go over the three main types of diabetes. They are Type 1, Type 2, Gestational diabetes.

I cannot find any local charities that will take the unused lancets. I get them free with my payment for the test strips. I do not use a new lancet for every test, so therefore, I have 3 boxes that have never been opened. I do not want to throw them away.

My son is 10 and quite overweight.
(Yep, I know that’s a bad thing. No, we aren’t junk food junkies. Yes, we need to increase our family’s activity level and we are working on that.)
He has gained 11 pounds in 2 months (approx a 10% increase)! Took him to doc for check up. Kid is also tired. No other obvious diabetes syptoms. Tested thyroid–OK. (Mine is low.)
I have heard of rapid weight gain being a symptom of diabetes, although it’s unusual. I mentioned this concern to doc and that type 1 & gestational diabetes are in my family plus lots of type 2. He said that only weight loss rather than gain would be a sign & didn’t test for diabetes. On the other hand, I think if I request it, he’ll probably do a test.
Could this be diabetes? If so which test is preferrable for children for detecting even pre-diabetes?
Thanks in advance!

There is no evidence of diabetes after many tests and there is not excessive urination at night. The sleep disturbances have not been helped with “sleep hygiene” methods. There is very vivid dreaming and recall. The thirst is high-moderate at all times with bouts of sudden great thrist, which if not eleviated quickly cause dizziness. There is also a history of brain trauma.
There isn’t excessive urination compared to the amount of water intake and urination is not the primary cause of insomnia. While there have been possible indicators of pituitary issue Prolactin levels seem to be in normal range. (Hx of thyrioditis-resolved.) This is curiousity based not looking for a diagnosis.
Any dosage of Melatonin triggers headaches. Water consumption is high so urine out put is probably comparable. It is not unsual to drink a liter of water while “sleeping”. Psychotherapy and sleep hygiene have not relieved symptoms. Symptoms have been on-going for 20 yrs.
