Question by : Anyone in Disease Control Know How To Help?
Hi, in my church congregation is a woman with type 2 diabetes. I was woozy in church this past Saturday, and she insisted that she use her monitoring equipment on me to check my blood sugar. She swears up and down that she used a new lancet, but used her own lancet pen to house the new lancet so I could put it against my skin to prick my finger. After she did this, a few hours later, I found out that she did, in fact have Hepatitis C. I am scared that I might have contracted it from this one episode, since this is the only time I have done this – I usually use only my own equipment at home. I am really worried now and went to the ER that night to get baseline tests and IG for Hep B and vaccinations for Hep A and Hep B, but that’s all they could do for Post-Exposure Prophylaxis for Hep C they said. I am really scared. What are the chances that I got Hep C from this situation, – I did not see any blood on the endcap of the lancet pen, but I know for a fact now that she definietly has Hep C.

Are you diabetic or pre-diabetic? As of 2007, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cited diabetes as the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Plus as of June 2008 the CDC estimated that approximately 24 million Americans have diabetes, while another 54 million are estimated to be pre-diabetic. There are millions of people out there that dont even realize that they have diabetes,â says Alan Weinstock, an insurance broker at http://www.MedicareSupplementPlans.com. Many of them are over the age of 65 and on Medicare.
This is significant because the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization ACT (MMA) of 2003 expanded diabetic services covered by Medicare to include diabetes screening for beneficiaries at risk for diabetes or those diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

For people with diabetes, health monitoring is essential to avoid medical complications. Blood sugar levels must be tested on a regular basis in order to keep the condition under control. There are many diabetes testing supplies on the market, so it is important for diabetics to choose the right testing kit to meet their specific needs.
Most diabetes testing meters work in the same manner: a test strip is inserted into the meter, an area of the body (usually a finger) is sterilized and then pricked with a lancet, and the blood that’s drawn is placed on a specific area of the test strip so that the meter can read the glucose levels. Even so, there is variety in the kinds of testing meters that are available, and certain variables should be kept in mind to ensure that the right diabetes testing kit is purchased to meet each individual’s needs. A few things to keep in mind are:
• Some testing kits include lancets for fingers only, while others include options for pricking other areas such as the arm, as well.
• Different meters require different amounts of blood. While some only require a drop or two of blood, others require significantly more to get an accurate reading.
• Test kits and strips vary in price as well as ease of use.
