I just found out today that I failed my initial glucose tolerance test (I’m 26 weeks pregnant) and now I have to take a 3 hour test. Has anyone ever failed the first test but come up ok on the 2nd one? I’m really bummed because I have been very careful in choosing healthy things to eat during my pregnancy—and yet I still may have gestational diabetes. I haven’t even gone crazy with food cravings!!! I’m wondering about the special diet you have to be on if you are indeed diabetic–is it extremely restrictive? Also, after you had your child, did it go away? My doctor says it will go away but I have heard about people remaining diabetic afterwards. Before I got pregnant I made sure my glucose levels were in check–because I was worried about this very thing.
I was just curious about other people’s experiences with this situation. Thanks!

My midwives said that I don’t need to do the glucose test since I am so low risk. I’m under 25, I’ve had 3 healthy children, and I’ve never had gestational diabetes before. They said I can still take it if I want to, just so that I can have it in my records that I passed it. They also said that they don’t have pregnant women fast and then drink that nasty drink. They have you eat a high protein breakfast, and you drink grape juice instead. They said there is no point in testing by using something that any normal person would never actually drink. So what do you think..should I just do it just to say that I did it and had no problems?
My midwives are probably more informed than most OB/GYNs. They didn’t say it was impossible for me to develop it, just that I am very low risk.
Cohen’s mum- Thanks for sharing that info with them. I’m glad to see someone here knows what they’re talking about!
Yeah, I think I agree with you guys that it can’t hurt to take it. I’m just grateful that it will be grape juice, because that other drink reminds me of orange soda, and I hate any type of soda.

I have had one doctor from the beginning of my pregnancy…. due to some circumstances out of my hands i had to move (my county is very large so though i was an hours drive away from my doctor i am still in the same county) i missed an appointment because of car troubles and i got real sick ended up in the hospital for pneumonia. Needless to say my doctor dropped me, and now i’m searching for a new doctor. everyone is turning me down, i have now missed my diabetes test and a sonogram because of this, and i have Medicaid. i’m about to be 34 weeks pregnant and the only advice i can get from these offices is to get my records and go to the hospital when any signs of labor show. Seems ridiculous to me considering alot of things could pop up that can mess with the delivery and can be fixed if seen in time. i’m worried and frustrated and i know because of a class i’m taking that physicians may not accept or deny a Medicaid patient on the basis of the individual patient and his or her circumstances…. i have no clue who to talk to about this or where to find the actual laws so i can fight. (the reason they won’t accept me is because if something goes wrong then it brings their stats down…. none care for the innocent child involved)
i know it’s not because of my medicaid, i also know the doctors are accepting patients i asked before inquiring. I’m not going to sue for something out of their hands i just want to know i don’t have diabetes again and that my child is ok. as for the lady who sided with the doctors, you make no sense. i have no difficulties and this is my second pregnancy. also getting a doctor has nothing to do with the timing of when i got dropped they are saying they won’t take me because i’m 33 weeks not because of space between my last appointment.

I am on birth control but I can’t say I’m the most diligent user and because of that my partner and I have generally used a condom as a backup. Once in a while we sometimes use the withdrawal method and pre-ejaculate excluded, he has been very good and withdrawing before ejaculation. The last time we used this method was over a month ago. I use my birth control so as to have a period (withdrawal) every three months and I have just started my withdrawal bleed. It doesn’t seem abnormal but for the past two weeks my body has felt off and I noticed an above average increase in my frequency and volume of urine. I know that this could be symptomatic of pregnancy and diabetes but I’ve decided to attempt to rule out pregnancy first. The question is; will taking a pregnancy test during my withdrawal bleed lend to giving me a false negative? If so, how long shall I wait after the end of my withdrawal bleed to take the test? It ends on Saturday, would using my first urine from Sunday be accurate enough or should I wait until Monday?

I am worried that he is going to come back with positive results and then insist on treatment, but those results will be too high. Would any ethical doctor allow a patient to take a blood test for diabetes and high cholesterol detection after they just ate? He did not ask what I ate.

I had my annual blood work done for my Cat in January, which came back perfectly fine/normal. I was told at the time she needed to have her teeth cleaned/a couple removed, but the price they quoted was too expensive. I subsequently took her to a different vet two months later who ran tests at the same time as doing the teeth – results came back as very severe diabetes. I figured they must have been wrong, because I had taken her to a reliable vet 2 months earlier.
In the past few weeks I took her to yet another vet who has confirmed my cat does have diabetes.
